Public Meeting on Oxford Mining Company’s Water Quality Certification Request

Information Session and Hearing Scheduled Thursday, May 25

Ohio EPA will hold a public information session at 6 p.m. on May 25, 2017, to discuss a water quality certification application for a mining project in Trimble Township near the intersection of Johnson Run and Oakdale roads. The information session will immediately be followed by a public hearing at Trimble High School, 1 Tomcat Drive, Glouster.

Discharges from this project have a potential to affect the quality of streams and wetlands in the Sunday Creek Watershed. Although the project may result in a change from current water quality conditions, the changes cannot violate Ohio’s water quality standards that protect human health and the environment. Ohio EPA will consider technical, economic, social and environmental aspects of the project before deciding to issue the Water Quality Certification. 

Comments may be presented at the May 25 hearing or submitted in writing to: Ohio EPA-DSW, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049; or by email: dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov. The public comment period will end June 1, 2017. Following consideration of public comments, Ohio EPA will decide on the application.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
