Ohio EPA Meeting about Proposed Mercury Limit Variance for Envirosafe’s Wastewater Discharge
Ohio EPA will hold a public hearing about a mercury variance request for the discharge from Envirosafe Services of Ohio’s wastewater treatment system on Wednesday, March 21, 2012. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Erie Center, 6200 Bayshore Road, Oregon.
At the meeting, Ohio EPA will present information, answer questions and accept public comments on Envirosafe’s request to change the mercury discharge limit for its wastewater treatment system.
The landfill has a permit from Ohio EPA that regulates storm water runoff from the closed landfill cells. The permit limits concentrations of pollutants such as mercury in the discharges. Federal rules are reducing the allowable mercury limit for Great Lakes watershed dischargers to 1.3 nanograms per liter (ng/l).
If Ohio EPA approves a variance from the federal limit, the facility’s permitted mercury discharges would remain consistent with levels currently being discharged from the landfill. The variance also would require Envirosafe to identify sources of mercury that go into the wastewater and take steps to minimize releases from those sources.
The landfill is located at 876 Otter Creek Road, Oregon, and discharges to Otter Creek and subsequently to Lake Erie. The discharge cannot exceed chemical-specific water quality standards that protect wildlife, aquatic life and human health. Ohio EPA is required to consider technical, economic, social and environmental aspects of the proposed project.
Ohio EPA will accept written comments on the application for the permit modification through March 28, 2012. Anyone may submit comments or request to be on the mailing list for information. To comment or receive information on the application, write to: Division of Surface Water, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049. Comments may be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org
. The application and other related materials are available for review at Ohio EPA’s Northwest District Office in Bowling Green by calling (419) 352-8461.
