Ohio EPA Issues Final Permit Renewal for Scioto County Chemical Manufacturer
Ohio EPA has renewed a hazardous waste permit for the Haverhill Chemicals LLC (formerly Sunoco Inc., R&M) facility, located at 1019 Haverhill-Ohio Furnace Rd. in Haverhill.
The facility produces industrial organic chemicals. In the process, Haverhill Chemicals generates hazardous waste. The permit that allows and regulates the storing and treatment of this waste must periodically be renewed.
Haverhill Chemicals can continue storing waste in three tanks on-site and burn the stored waste in on-site boilers.
Haverhill’s hazardous waste is regulated by both Ohio EPA and U.S. EPA permits since the latter Agency has jurisdiction over certain federal regulations. Since Haverhill’s permit renewal application has been deemed complete and meets appropriate standards, both permits were issued final. The permits also require Haverhill to maintain areas where it had previously cleaned up hazardous waste and to clean up any new releases at the facility.
Ohio EPA accepted and considered public comments received about the draft renewal permit through the close of the public comment period on Nov. 12, 2011. The Agency prepared a response to comments document, which may be viewed online with the final renewal permit.

Issuance of the permit can be appealed to the Ohio Environmental Review Appeals Commission (ERAC). Appeals generally must be filed within 30 days of issuing the final action; therefore, Ohio EPA recommends that anyone wishing to file an appeal contact ERAC at (614) 466-8950 for more information.
