Ohio EPA Schedules Public Meeting Concerning Cleanup Plan for RCA/Thomson Consumer Electronics Site
Ohio EPA will hold an information session and public hearing on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, to review a proposed cleanup of the RCA/Thomson Consumer Electronics site located at 24300 U.S. Route 23 South, Circleville. The 7 p.m. meeting is at the Circleville Fire Department meeting room, 586 North Court, Circleville.
At the public meeting, an Ohio EPA representative will outline the proposed cleanup of the property and answer questions. After the information session, citizens will have an opportunity to submit written or oral comments about the preferred plan. All public comments will be considered prior to Ohio EPA’s final decision on the plan.
The facility, located on a 227-acre site, formerly made picture tubes for televisions. Several areas at the site were affected by materials used in the manufacturing process. Any contaminants will be remediated to levels that are protective of people’s health and the environment.
Citizens may testify at the meeting or submit comments in writing to Ohio EPA, Central District Office, attn: David O’Toole, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, OH, 43216-1049; or by phone, (614) 728-5040; fax, (614) 728-3893; or email, David.O’Toole@epa.ohio.gov. The public comment period ends April 18, 2014.
A copy of the preferred plan and other related documents are available for review online or at Ohio EPA, Central District Office by first calling Lisa Oltman at (614) 728-0793.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
