Ohio EPA Hosting Meeting about Middletown Energy Center Permit
Ohio EPA has issued a draft air permit for the construction of Middletown Energy Center. Ohio EPA and the Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency will hold a public information session and hearing on Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, to explain the draft permit and accept public comments. The meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Middletown City Council Chambers, One Donham Plaza, Middletown.
If approved, the permit would allow construction of the 500 megawatt natural gas electric generating facility.
Ohio EPA and Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency will accept written comments on the draft permit through Nov. 3. Ohio EPA will take all public comments into consideration before taking a final action on the permit.
To comment or receive information on the draft air permit, write to Kurt Smith, Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency, 250 William Howard Taft Road, Cincinnati, OH 45219. The application, draft permit and other related materials are available for review at the Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency by calling (513) 946-7759. The draft permit is available online.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
