Ohio EPA to Accept Public Comments Regarding Draft Liberty Casting Company Air Permit

Ohio EPA will hold an information session and public hearing at 6 p.m. on Jan. 26, 2015, about a draft air permit that would allow for a business expansion at Liberty Casting Co., 550 Liberty Road, Delaware. The hearing will be held at the Frank B. Willis Government Building, 2079 U.S. Route 23, Delaware.

This draft permit would allow the installation and operation of equipment associated with the production of metal castings. The process emits air pollutants.

Before issuing the draft air permit-to-install-and operate, Ohio EPA reviewed the company’s application to ensure that emissions would comply with federal and state air pollution control standards, laws and regulations. The draft air permit would establish emission limits to protect public health and the environment. This permit also would limit the facility material usage and number of hours of operation.

If the permit is approved, Liberty Casting’s total maximum air emissions would not be allowed to exceed levels that protect people’s health and the environment. This permit would allow an increase of 18 tons per year of particulate and 31 tons per year of volatile organic compounds.

Written comments are considered equally with oral testimony presented at the hearing. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
