April 6 Hearing Set for Revised Rules for Closing Facilities

Ohio EPA is seeking public input until April 6, 2017, about proposed changes to rules governing facilities that temporarily or permanently stop regulated operations.

A public hearing will be held at 10:30 a.m. on April 6, 2017, at Ohio EPA conference center room A, 6th floor, Lazarus Government Center, 50 West Town Street, Columbus. All visitors should bring photo identification in order to register at the security desk in the lobby upon arrival.

Typically known as the Cessation of Regulated Operations (CRO), these rules include requirements for the proper handling of contaminated equipment and waste materials, hazardous substances, site security, designating a contact person, etc. These requirements are designed to ensure the protection of human health and the environment when a facility is no longer operating. One of the nine rules regulating this program would be amended to update a list of cross-references.

Written testimony should be sent to the attention of Kit Arthur, DERR, Ohio EPA, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus Ohio, 43216-1049, or emailed to katherine.arthur@epa.ohio.gov.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
