Ohio EPA To Host Hearing Regarding AK Steel UIC Renewal
Ohio EPA will host an information session and public hearing on March 14, 2013, to accept comments on draft renewals for two underground injection control permits for AK Steel’s spent pickle liquor. If approved, the company would continue to inject the spent material at its Crawford Street facility for up to six years before the next required permit renewal. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the city of Middletown’s council chambers, One Donham Plaza.
Pickle liquor is used to remove scale from metal during the steel making process. When the material is spent and no longer is effective, it’s injected into a sandstone formation deep beneath the surface.
Copies of the draft permits may be inspected at the Midpointe Library Middletown, 125 S. Broad St., Middletown; Ohio EPA’s Southwest District Office, 401 E. Fifth St., Dayton by calling (937) 285-6357; or at Ohio EPA, Central Office, 50 W. Town St., Columbus by first calling Jess Stottsberry at (614) 644-2752.
Written testimony will be given the same weight as oral testimony and will be accepted until the close of business March 22, 2013. Written comments may be sent to Ohio EPA, Division of Drinking and Ground Waters, Attn: UIC Unit Supervisor, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. In the past 40 years, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling. Ohio EPA….40 years and moving forward.
