Ohio EPA Aligns Asbestos Rules with Federal Definition

Ohio EPA has proposed rule changes governing the state’s asbestos emissions control program and will hold a public hearing to accept comments on Friday, June 7, 2013.

The hearing will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Ohio EPA’s Central Office, 50 West Town Street, Suite 700, Columbus. Please bring a photo ID for registration at the security desk. All interested parties wishing to testify at the hearing will be given an opportunity to comment for the record.

A draft version of the rules was issued for a 40-day review period before being proposed. Based on public comments, Ohio EPA is proposing to return to the long-standing federal definition for a residential exemption, making it identical to federal rule.

Copies of the proposed rule changes are available on Ohio EPA’s website, or by emailing Paul Braun. Written comments may be mailed to Ohio EPA, Division of Air Pollution Control, Attention: Paul Braun, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049. Written comments must be received by Ohio EPA by the close of business June 7, 2013. Ohio EPA will consider all comments before any final action is taken on these rules.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. In the past 40 years, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling. Ohio EPA….40 years and moving forward.
