On America Recycles Day, Ohio EPA Encourages Citizens to Recycle

Today is America Recycles Day and Ohio EPA is encouraging people to recycle at home, school and work.

Recycling is an important way for individuals and businesses to reduce the waste they generate and minimize the impact of that waste. Because recycling is becoming a big business in Ohio, every time someone recycles, it also supports the many companies and employees doing this important work. So reduce, reuse, recycle and buy recycled content products. These efforts benefit the environment and the economy.

To support these efforts, Ohio EPA has developed a statewide glass recycling initiative to build an infrastructure to recover more glass in the state of Ohio. The Agency will work to establish nine regional glass recovery centers, expand the capacity of glass recycling at materials recovery facilities and develop voluntary bar and restaurant recycling programs in communities across the state.

America Recycles Day is a national program that began in 1997. Communities across the country have participated in America Recycles Day to educate, promote environmental citizenship, and encourage recycling actions. To learn more about Ohio events visit AmericaRecyclesDay.org.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
