Ohio EPA Awards Grant for Lorain County Metro Parks’ Prairie Meadow Project
Ohio EPA has awarded an environmental education mini grant to Lorain County Metro Parks to support a prairie meadow restoration project at the Sandy Ridge Reservation in North Ridgeville. The park system is one of nine Ohio organizations to be awarded Ohio Environmental Education Fund (OEEF) mini grants totaling $35,192.
Metro Parks will use its $3,025 grant to plant seeds in the five-acre meadow and install educational signs to inform visitors about native plant species. The signs also will explain how the site captures and filters storm water runoff from nearby parking lots and roads. Additional educational materials will be made available at the park and online.
The Ohio Environmental Education Fund provides funding each year for environmental education projects targeting kindergarten through university students, the general public and the regulated community. For additional information, visit the Ohio Environmental Education Fund or call (614) 644-2873.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
