Ohio EPA to Accept Comments Regarding Proposed Wilmington Sanitary Landfill Expansion

Ohio EPA is taking public comments on a draft permit issued to the city of Wilmington for an expansion of the Wilmington Sanitary Landfill. The Agency will hold an information session immediately followed by a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013. The hearing will take place in the Wilmington City Council Chambers, 69 N. South St., Wilmington.

The landfill is at 397 S. Nelson Ave. The draft permit is for a vertical expansion for 297,261 additional cubic yards of permitted capacity. If approved, the facility would have a total capacity of 1,945,957 cubic yards at the 21-acre site and the anticipated life expectancy of the landfill would be 3.3 to 14.5 years.

The application and draft permit may be viewed at Ohio EPA’s Southwest District Office, 401 E. Fifth St., Dayton, by first calling (937) 285-6357 and making an appointment.

Comments are accepted both orally and in writing. Verbal and written comments are given the same weight. In addition to presenting written comments at the hearing, they will be accepted through the close of business Friday, Dec. 27, 2013.

Written comments should be mailed to Ohio EPA, Division of Materials and Waste Management, Processing and Records Management Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
