Ohio EPA Awards Environmental Education Grant to The Ohio State University

Ohio EPA has awarded a $34,258 environmental education grant to The Ohio State University’s Ohio Bioproducts Innovation Center to develop an interactive display titled, “Welcome to the Biorefinery Concept for Environmental Education.” Eight grants were awarded statewide for $264,361.

Funding will be applied toward a traveling interactive display used to demonstrate how recyclables can be separated and sold in markets and how organic waste can be processed to produce energy and fertilizer for food production. It also can show how a biorefinery can reduce the amount of municipal solid waste going into landfills. Reusing organic waste will create jobs while increasing public awareness of bioproducts. The Ohio Soybean Council is collaborating.

The Ohio Environmental Education Fund is administered by Ohio EPA. For additional information, contact the Ohio Environmental Education Fund on the web or at (614) 644-2873.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
