Ohio EPA Awards Environmental Education Grant to Butler and Hamilton County Organization

Ohio EPA has awarded the Mill Creek Watershed Council of Communities a $22,000 environmental education grant for its project “Clean Rain in the Drain.” Eight grants were awarded statewide for $264,361.

The grant will support an education program that focuses on environmental stewardship when dealing with lawn care. Seven local communities are required to conduct environmental education to meet Ohio’s wastewater/storm water management education requirements. The project also will measure how proper lawn care practices and reducing over-fertilization in a residential demonstration area affects water quality in the Upper Mill Creek Watershed. These results will be shared.

In addition, the Council of Communities will present workshops and fact sheets to provide information about lawn care management to residents in 34 local communities. Butler and Hamilton County Soil and Water Conservation Districts are collaborating.

The Ohio Environmental Education Fund is administered by Ohio EPA.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
