Ohio EPA Awards Grants to Address Scrap Tire Processing and Market Development

To improve markets for scrap tires across the state, Ohio EPA has awarded $600,000 to fund two market development projects. Nearly 57,000 Ohio scrap tires are expected to be recycled over the next two years from these two projects.

“This is a great opportunity to team up with Ohio businesses to reduce the number of discarded scrap tires and reuse them as a valuable feedstock,” said Ohio EPA Director Craig W. Butler.

The program provides financial assistance for businesses that propose projects to develop successful scrap tire markets or innovate with scrap tire-based products.

Jackson Township in Franklin County has been awarded $350,000 in grant funds on behalf of Liberty Tire Service to assist the company in expanding a scrap tire processing facility. This project is expected to create and retain two new jobs.

The village of Botkins in Shelby County has been awarded $250,000 in grant funds on behalf of Boomerang Rubber Inc. to develop a new product manufacturing line using scrap tire material. The new manufacturing process is expected to generate and retain 27 new jobs.

Ohio EPA is responsible for implementing statewide waste reduction, recycling, recycling market development, scrap tire and litter prevention programs. Ohioans are encouraged to reduce waste, recycle materials and buy recycled-content products.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
