Ohio EPA Awards Grants For Recycling and Litter Prevention

Ohio EPA is awarding nearly $1.5 million in grant funding to help 25 communities strengthen local recycling and litter prevention efforts.

“Investing in community recycling programs protects our environment, saves valuable landfill space and strengthens our economy,” said Ohio EPA Director Craig Butler.

The grants will develop five curbside programs, address logistical issues with two commercial recycling programs, provide more efficient equipment to four material recovery facilities (MRFs), and offer financial resources to numerous litter education and special venue projects.

By creating or expanding a curbside recycling program, the primary focus is to protect Ohio’s environment by reusing material, saving the energy that would have been used to make new material, preserving landfill space, and supporting important jobs in the recycling, processing and hauling business.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
