Ohio EPA Schedules Meeting to Discuss Hilltop Landfill Site
Remediation plans for the former Hilltop landfill located in Ellsworth Township will be the focus of a May 29, 2014, Ohio EPA public hearing. The information session and public hearing will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Ellsworth Township Hall, 11125 West Akron Canfield Road, North Jackson (Mahoning County).
The hearing will provide citizens with an opportunity to ask questions and submit comments concerning Ohio EPA’s preferred remediation plan for a 20-acre property, also known as Old Toth Landfill.
If approved, the remedy would require:
landfill cover improvements;
leachate collection system enhancements;
long-term operation and maintenance work;
ground water monitoring; and
environmental covenants defining activity and use limitations.
Comments concerning the preferred plan may be presented at the public hearing or submitted in writing to Ohio EPA’s Northeast District Office, attention: Sheila Abraham, 2110 East Aurora Road, Twinsburg, Ohio 44087, or email@example.com. The public comment period ends June 6, 2014. All comments submitted by that date will be considered prior to taking final action.
The plan and related documents can be obtained at the Canfield Public Library, 43 West Main Street, Canfield, and at the Northeast District Office in Twinsburg by first calling (330) 963-1200 for an appointment.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
