Ohio EPA Awards Environmental Education Mini Grant to Seneca SWCD

The Seneca Soil and Water Conservation District has been awarded a $4,828 Ohio EPA environmental education mini grant to purchase a mobile education unit. Eight projects were funded for $34,513.

The district’s mobile education initiative will include purchasing equipment staff can use to teach livestock producers, grain farmers, wildlife-interested audiences and the general population at field day programs around the county. The mobile unit will bring the lessons to locations convenient for the audience.

Cover crops, nutrient budgeting and soil health lessons will be the primary topics and presented on the sites of farms, home gardens, golf courses and lawns to teach about the need to reduce nutrient loading in the Sandusky River and Lake Erie. The equipment also will be used by staff to teach about storm water management, air quality, habitat restoration and other environmental topics at locations were the impacts and improvements can be seen first-hand. Local farmers already have agreed to host programs.

The Ohio Environmental Education Fund provides funding each year for environmental education projects targeting kindergarten through university students, the general public and the regulated community. For additional information, visit the Ohio Environmental Education Fund or call (614) 644-2873.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
