Ohio EPA Awards $8,700 Environmental Education Grant to Athens and Perry County Organization

Ohio University has received a $8,700 grant from Ohio EPA’s Environmental Education Fund to allow fourth and fifth grade students from four school districts to expand their use of existing land labs and local habitats. Eleven grants were awarded statewide for $304,136.

Students in Trimble Local Schools, Athens Local Schools, Mill Creek Elementary School and Nelsonville-York Schools will benefit from this grant.

Trimble Local Schools will purchase aquatic nets, field guides and hand lenses to facilitate their study of watersheds; Athens Local Schools will purchase binoculars, nest boxes, butterfly nets and materials for Classroom Feeder Watch and a pollinator project; Mill Creek Elementary School will use a vernal pool on the school campus to study food webs and will purchase field guides and spotting scopes; and Nelsonville-York Schools are using a small no-mow area to attract birds to an observation area and will take a student field trip to the Wayne National Forest to compare bird observations.

The Ohio Environmental Education Fund is administered by Ohio EPA. Eligible grant recipients include environmental groups, public and private schools, colleges and universities, trade or professional organizations, businesses and state and local governments. For additional information, contact the Ohio Environmental Education Fund on the web or at (614) 644-2873.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
