Ohio EPA to Accept Public Comments Regarding Application for Water Quality Impacts Related to Byesville Company

Ohio EPA will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 15, 2014, regarding draft permits to install and discharge from a proposed new wastewater treatment system at Island Aseptics, located at 100 Hope Ave., Byesville. The hearing will take place in the Byesville Village Hall, 221 E. Main St.

If the permits are approved, the facility would be permitted to use a membrane bioreactor to treat wastewater associated with the juice-making process. The project would eliminate the company’s need to discharge to the Byesville sanitary sewer system.

The proposed discharge would lower water quality of Wills Creek but impacts would not be permitted to exceed state standards set to protect people’s health and the environment.

Written comments are considered equally with oral testimony presented at the hearing. Written comments may be submitted until 5 p.m. on Dec. 22, 2014, to Ohio EPA-DSW, Attn: Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049 or emailed to dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
