Ohio EPA Awards $24,070 Environmental Education Grant to Medina County Organization

Ohio EPA awarded a $24,070 environmental education grant to the Medina County Beekeepers Association to promote beekeeper collaboration to create pollinator habitats. Ten grants were awarded statewide for $269,334.

Education materials, signs, native bee houses and seeds will be purchased and applied to educate landowners about pollinators and convert grassy land areas into bee habitats in Holmes, Medina, Montgomery and Summit counties. Corporate, institutional and other landowners will prepare land to be transitioned into pollinator habitats and agree to maintain the land as a pollinator habitat for five years.

Local beekeepers and 4-H youth will work with a land partner to place pollinators in a food supply area that contains nectar and pollen from blooming plants within flight range for the bees, or place native pollinator houses on an appropriate site. Collaborators include the Ohio State Beekeepers Association and the Pollinator Stewardship Council.

The Ohio Environmental Education Fund is administered by Ohio EPA. Eligible grant recipients include nonprofit organizations, public and private schools, colleges and universities, trade or professional associations, businesses and state and local governments.

The next grant application deadline is Jan. 15, 2015, with an electronic letter of intent to apply due by Jan. 8. For additional information, contact the Ohio Environmental Education Fund at (614) 644-2873.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
