Ohio EPA Awards Environmental Education Grant to Ohio Interfaith Power & Light

College interns will join with Ohio Interfaith Power and Light (OhIPL) to work with congregations and faith-based organizations statewide to plan, prioritize and implement initiatives and research sustainability options. An Ohio EPA environmental education grant is helping fund the project.

Through the partnership, both students and organizations will build skills in sustainability, such as energy conservation, through hands-on experience. The project will include workshops, educational events, facility energy and water use audits and Green Team development.

Cool Congregations will be featured in video profiles and on the OhIPL Earth Stewards Directory of Resources, sharing their successes and providing inspirational examples for other congregations and people of faith.

The project is being funded with a $32,157 grant. Twelve grants were awarded statewide for $322,110. Eligible grant recipients include environmental groups, public and private schools, colleges and universities, trade or professional organizations, businesses and state and local governments. For additional information, contact the Ohio Environmental Education Fund on the web or at (614) 644-2873.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
