Ohio EPA Awards Nearly $600,000 for 2015 Litter Management Grants

Ohio EPA is awarding $599,445 in grant funding to 41 local governments to support local litter cleanup events and tire amnesty programs.

Local governments use these monies to fund litter collection events, community awareness programming or create opportunities for residents to get rid of scrap tires. All local cleanup efforts will involve the work of volunteers and are on public property.

The Litter Cleanup and Tire Amnesty Grant program requires a 10 percent match and is available to local governments, park or health districts, state colleges and universities, solid waste authorities or Keep America Beautiful communities.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
