Ohio EPA Accepting Comments on Proposal to Remove Beneficial Use Impairment from Maumee Area of Concern
Ohio EPA is taking public comments on a proposal to remove a Beneficial Use Impairment from the federally designated Maumee Area of Concern. Comments are due to Ohio EPA by Friday, Aug. 7, 2015.
The “added costs to agriculture and industry” impairment can be removed because there is no longer extra treatment required for agricultural or industrial consumers to use the water for their processes and practices. A local review of agricultural and industrial water users was conducted and used to determine the impairment can be removed.
The only location within the Maumee Area of Concern listed with this impairment was on the Ottawa River. The affected industry is no longer using water from the Ottawa River.
A summary of the proposal is available at: http://epa.ohio.gov/Portals/35/documents/MaumeeAOCBUI12RemovalRequestDraft.pdf.
Comments can be sent to Cherie Blair, Ohio EPA Northwest District Office, 347 N. Dunbridge Road, Bowling Green, OH 43402, or email@example.com by the close of business on Aug. 7. Comments received after Aug. 7 may be considered as time and circumstances allow.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
