Ohio EPA Awards Environmental Education Grant to Clark County Organization

Clark County teachers will have an opportunity to take Healthy Water Healthy People and Wonders of Wetlands training, funded in part with a $4,050 Ohio Environmental Education Fund grant to the Clark County Solid Waste District. A total of seven grants were awarded statewide for $32,319.

The Clark County Solid Waste District and the Clark County Parks District will host a workshop in fall 2016 to introduce primary and secondary teachers in Clark County to the Healthy Water Healthy People (HWHP) and Wonders of Wetlands (WOW) curricula. Lessons demonstrated will focus on water runoff, wetlands, the water cycle, nonpoint source pollution, and watersheds.

The workshop also will include a demonstration of an Enviroscape model, which will be available to teachers as a hands-on tool. The workshop will be held at George Rogers Clark Park, allowing the group to use the creek in the park as a setting for at least one activity, weather permitting.

The next OEEF application deadline will be July 15, with an electronic letter of intent to apply due no later than July 8.

The Ohio Environmental Education Fund is administered by Ohio EPA. Eligible grant recipients include environmental groups, public and private schools, colleges and universities, trade or professional organizations, businesses and state and local governments. For additional information, contact the Ohio Environmental Education Fund online or at (614) 644-2873.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
