Ohio EPA Awards $5,000 Environmental Education Grant to Cuyahoga County Organization

Students will have the opportunity to study birds at Hathaway Brown School’s 16-acre suburban campus funded in part with a $5,000 Ohio Environmental Education Fund grant to the school. A total of seven grants were awarded statewide for $32,319.

This project will restore a small section of Hathaway Brown's 16-acre suburban campus that is dedicated as a bird sanctuary. The space currently is lightly-wooded with some shrubs and lawn beneath it.

Teachers will show students how to enhance the bird and pollinator habitat by removing non-native species and planting additional native perennial herbaceous plants and shrubs that will create an edge/woodland habitat to invite in birds. The space will also be designed as a nature exploration and play space for the school’s Early Childhood program, which will develop (with guidance from Shaker Lakes Nature Center) and implement expanded nature play, exploration and stewardship curriculum using the space.

The next OEEF application deadline will be July 15, with an electronic letter of intent to apply due no later than July 8.

The Ohio Environmental Education Fund is administered by Ohio EPA. Eligible grant recipients include environmental groups, public and private schools, colleges and universities, trade or professional organizations, businesses and state and local governments. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
