Tire Removal Begins at Jefferson County Site
Ohio EPA has contracted with Liberty Tire Recycling to remove an estimated 1.1 million tires from the Crossridge Landfill, 3250 County Road 26, Wintersville. The property is owned by Crossridge, Inc. The cleanup is expected to be completed on or before Nov. 11.
Tires will be removed from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. While the tire removal is occurring, area residents may see an increase in truck traffic.
More than 1 million tires are stored at Crossridge in 27 tire piles divided by fire lanes. Improperly managed scrap tires can become a nuisance and public safety concern, and provide a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitos. A scrap tire fire can generate toxic smoke and oil that can contaminate surface water and ground water resources.
This $2.2 million project is being funded by Ohio’s scrap tire management fund. An Ohio EPA fact sheet explains the processes available to clean up scrap tire sites.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
