Ohio EPA to Hold Hearing About Crawford County Landfill Expansion Draft Permit
Ohio EPA will hold an information session and public hearing at 6 p.m. on August 23, 2016, regarding a draft permit to expand the Crawford County Sanitary Landfill. The hearing will take place in the Bucyrus City Council Chambers, 500 S. Sandusky Ave., Bucyrus.
The landfill, located at 5128 Lincoln Hwy., currently is approved for 46.8 acres. The expansion would add an additional 35 acres horizontally (81.8 total acres) and five feet vertically.
Currently, the landfill is permitted to accept 1,200 tons of waste per day. In 2015, it averaged 523 tons per day. At the current average rate of waste acceptance, the landfill would close in 12 years, 1 month. If the expansion is approved, it would add an estimated 29 years, 1 month to the life of the facility.
Ohio EPA values public input. Oral and written comments will be accepted at the hearing. Written comments also will be accepted through Aug. 30, 2016. Written comments may be emailed to: firstname.lastname@example.org or mailed to Ohio EPA DMWM, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216, Attn: Megan Ujvari.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
