Ohio EPA Awards Environmental Education Grant to The Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology
More than 450 students from kindergarten through second grade will benefit from a five-month program for elementary teachers through Ohio State University. The Kindling Investigation and Discovery in Science and Social Studies program will provide professional development to 20 teachers and help them integrate Ohio’s learning standards in science and social studies.

Ohio EPA to Accept Comments on Discharge to Kokosing River
Ohio EPA will hold an information session and public hearing at 6 p.m. on Nov. 9, 2015, to accept comments about a draft permit for a proposed discharge to the Kokosing River. The hearing will be held at the Zolman Memorial Building, 6880 State Route 95, Chesterville Township (Morrow County).

Franklin County will begin design work – the pre-construction phase – this year in an upgrade of the Darbydale wastewater treatment plant to reduce nutrient discharges and improve water quality in Big Darby Creek, thanks to a zero-interest loan from Ohio EPA.

Columbus to Improve Wastewater Treatment; Receives Financing from Ohio EPA
Columbus is eliminating incineration and increasing the beneficial reuse of biosolids at its Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant. With low-interest financing from Ohio EPA, the city will construct additional storage and handling facilities to manage all of the sludge generated through the wastewater treatment process and eliminate the need for incineration as one of the disposal options.

Jackson to Improve Wastewater Treatment with Ohio EPA Funds
Jackson will take steps to eliminate sewer backups and improve water quality in Salt Lick Creek. This is the first phase of infrastructure improvements that will eliminate sanitary sewer overflows, sewer cross connections, wastewater treatment bypasses and provide equipment upgrades.

Ohio EPA Awards Environmental Education Grant to OSU’s Stone Laboratory
The Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory this year will analyze and provide data to researchers studying cyanobacteria blooms in Lake Erie. Weekly water samples will be collected by students and charter boat captains to share information about algae biomass, microcystin, nutrient runoff and other water quality parameters. An Ohio EPA Environmental Education Fund grant is helping fund the program.

Ohio EPA Recycling Grant Helps Columbus with Sustainability Efforts
Columbus will incorporate an estimated 3,500 tons of reclaimed asphalt shingles (RAS) in pavement used to resurface residential streets, collectors and arteries in 2015 with help from a $156,775 grant from Ohio EPA.

Grants Help Recycling Partnerships, Support Ohio’s Glass Manufacturers
Ohio EPA is awarding more than $459,298 in grants to help direct waste glass that would end up in landfills to Ohio’s manufacturers in the form of cullet – clean bits of ground jars, bottles and windows. Ohio manufacturers need recycled glass to produce new glass products, including glass bottles and fiberglass. About 90 percent of glass containers used in Ohio ends up in landfills. Using recycled glass costs less than using raw materials by reducing energy demands.
