Ohio EPA Awards $42,000 Environmental Education Grant to OSU Extension for Manure Application Research
Expanding the manure application window into late spring and early summer will benefit crops and reduce runoff of nutrients that contribute to harmful algal blooms in Ohio surface waters. A $42,000 Ohio Environmental Education Fund grant from Ohio EPA to the Ohio State University Extension Service will help fund on-farm demonstration plots in seven western and northwestern Ohio counties.

The Civic Garden Center of Greater Cincinnati has been awarded a $31,758 Ohio Environmental Education Fund grant from Ohio EPA to develop a mobile, interactive urban water cycle display to educate students and adults about how sewer systems work. It’s a mad, mad, mad, Mad River world at Graham Local Schools. The district has been awarded a $2,500 Ohio EPA Environmental Education Fund mini grant to expand its “Trout in the Classroom” program for students in second through 12th grades. Nine projects throughout the state were funded for $36,589.

Ohio EPA Hosting Meeting about Middletown Energy Center Permit
Ohio EPA has issued a draft air permit for the construction of Middletown Energy Center. Ohio EPA and the Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency will hold a public information session and hearing on Monday, Oct. 27, 2014, to explain the draft permit and accept public comments. The meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Middletown City Council Chambers, One Donham Plaza, Middletown.

Four Photographs Chosen as Overall Judges’ Favorites In 2014 ‘Life on Lake Erie’ Photo Contest
Four diverse photographs won the judges’ compliments as the overall favorites in the 2014 Life on Lake Erie photo contest. Each photographer was recognized, along with seven other winning photos, by the members of the Ohio Lake Erie Commission at their Sept. 25 meeting at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Oak Harbor. This year’s photo contest winners are from all along the Lake Erie shoreline from Toledo to Conneaut and as far south as Vandalia. The winning photos can be found on OLEC’s website, www.lakeerie.ohio.gov.
