Case Western Reserve University – Leonard Gelfand STEM Center will hold professional development workshops for teachers in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District to help educate students about important issues facing Lake Erie. Teachers will participate in a week-long workshop to develop programs they can implement with their students at the newly established Kelley’s Island Field Station and the Cleveland Metroparks’ Stewardship Center at West Creek.

Ohio Digging up Ideas for Beneficial Use of Dredge Material
Lake Erie is one of Ohio’s greatest assets and its harbors must be dredged regularly to keep ports open for shipping. Much of the material dredged from the lake currently is dumped into the open waters of the lake. However, most of the material could be used for projects to benefit the environment and economy. In addition, Governor Kasich signed Senate Bill 1 into law in 2015, which requires open lake disposal of dredged material to end by July 1, 2020.

Ohio EPA Decision Clears Way For Cleveland Harbor Dredging
Ohio EPA approved a request by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to dredge the Cleveland Harbor and Cuyahoga River, which is essential to allowing shipping traffic to continue using this economically important waterway. No dredged material can be placed in the open lake.
