Ohio EPA Director Chris Korleski and other federal, state and local officials biked from downtown Columbus to the new Scioto Audubon Metro Park to celebrate the cleanup of the 18-acre Northern Tier, a former railroad yard and historically industrial area.
Ohio EPA Director Chris Korleski signs a covenant not to sue for the 18-acre Northern Tier, certifying that the property complies with Ohio EPA’s Voluntary Action Program (VAP) standards for recreational land use. This pivotal document approves redevelopment of the Northern Tier for a dog park, wetlands, walking trails, playfields and picnic areas.

A view of Ohio EPA Director Chris Korleski from the top of the 35-foot rock wall at the new Scioto Audubon Metro Park on the Whittier Peninsula. “Climbing these new heights is an appropriate and enjoyable way to demonstrate we’ve come a long way together to clean up contamination on the Whittier Peninsula,” Korleski said. “This once polluted Northern Tier is now protective of public health and safety and the environment, so Central Ohio families can feel safe to visit and connect with nature here. Ohio EPA has officially approved the cleanup on 44 acres of the peninsula and another dozen acres are soon to be approved. This is a work in progress, and we can be proud that we’ve reached another milestone worth celebrating this 40th anniversary of Earth Day.”
