Batavia Students Win Ohio 2020 Future City Competition

Schools from Ashland, Clermont, Franklin, Medina, Seneca, Stark, and Summit Counties Receive Awards

Batavia Middle School from Clermont County won the Ohio region of DiscoverE’s Future City Competition on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, at Eastland-Fairfield Career and Technical School in Groveport. The students now will travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in the national competition during National Engineers Week, Feb. 15-19.

Teams of sixth, seventh and eighth graders from 16 middle schools throughout the state researched technologies, designed cities, presented plans and models, and wrote 1,500-word essays on the topic “Clean Water: Tap into Tomorrow.” The teams competed for awards in categories including infrastructure, recreation, transportation, energy, use of recycled materials, ceramics, land surveying practices, rookie of the year, and people’s choice. The Ohio regional competition is sponsored in part by PPG, AEP, Commonwealth Associates, Ohio University’s Russ College of Engineering, Ohio EPA, IBI Group, YesPress Graphics, and Eastland-Fairfield Career and Technical School.

Runners-up were: Genoa Middle School from Westerville, second place; St. Ambrose Middle School from Brunswick, third place; Walnut Springs Middle School in Westerville, fourth place; and Crestview Middle School from Ashland, fifth place.

Ohio EPA sponsored two special award categories. Dublin’s Sells Middle School won the Best Use of Water Resources Engineering category. Teams selected appropriate drinking water sources, treatment technologies, collection and distribution systems, and disposal locations. The strategic location of drinking water and wastewater treatment plants, use of water conservation strategies, and efforts to protect water sources also were considered in the scoring.

St. Vincent De Paul Parish School from Akron won the Most Environmentally Friendly category. In this category, teams planned for handling outflows from industrial, commercial, and residential waste streams along with recycling strategies, advanced energy plants, treatment techniques, and efforts to keep effluent streams away from residential areas.

  • Best Use of Energy (American Electric Power - Ohio) – Genoa Middle School, Westerville
  • Best Use of Recreation (Worthington AM Rotary Club) – Genoa Middle School, Westerville
  • Best Use of Recycled Materials (Hull & Associates, Inc.) – St. Vincent De Paul Parish School, Akron
  • Best Land Surveying Practices (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying) – Sells Middle School, Dublin
  • Best Use of Transportation (Commonwealth Engineers, Inc.) – Calvert Catholic School, Tiffin
  • Best Computer City Design (Future City Ohio) – Tie between St Vincent De Paul Parish School, Akron and Genoa Middle School, Westerville.
  • Best Essay (Future City Ohio) – Tie between Genoa Middle School, Westerville and St. Ambrose, Brunswick.
  • Rookie Team of the Year (Future City Ohio) – STEAMM Academy at Hartford, Canton
  • People’s Choice (Battelle Memorial Institute) – Heritage Middle School, Westerville

What began in 1992 as a model project to encourage math and science skills, and lay a foundation for engineering careers, has become the nation’s largest engineering education program.

The Future City Competition introduces students to different engineering fields, such as civil, electrical, chemical, agricultural, biomedical, mechanical, computer software, and hardware engineering. Competing also gives students a chance to improve writing, public speaking, teamwork, time management, and problem-solving skills while developing new computer skills.
