Ohio EPA Awards $24,400 Environmental Education Grant to Warren County SWCD

A $24,400 Ohio Environmental Education Fund grant from Ohio EPA will fund new interactive exhibits in the Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Thomas C. Spellmire Water Trailer. Ten grants were awarded statewide for $269,334.

The new exhibits will enhance the traveling water quality education trailer and allow it to accommodate more visitors at a time.

It will use computer projection technology to create two interactive stream tables that will have lessons on erosion, nonpoint source pollution, pollution prevention and other environmental issues. External graphics will be wrapped on the outside of the trailer to educate visitors about wetlands and stream ecology. A third graphic of a streambed also will be used as flooring on the trailer’s ramp.

The traveling exhibit reaches 15,000 students and adults annually at school programs and community events.

The Ohio Environmental Education Fund is administered by Ohio EPA. Eligible grant recipients include nonprofit organizations, public and private schools, colleges and universities, trade or professional associations, businesses and state and local governments.

The next grant application deadline is Jan. 15, 2015, with an electronic letter of intent to apply due by Jan. 8. For additional information, contact the Ohio Environmental Education Fund at (614) 644-2873.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
