Ohio EPA Awards Environmental Education Grant for Composting Campaign in Mahoning and Columbiana Counties

A Youngstown-based organization will spend the next year promoting composting throughout Mahoning and Columbiana counties, thanks to a $7,194 grant from the Ohio Environmental Education Fund (OEEF). The grant was awarded to Grow Youngstown – one of seven Ohio communities and organizations to receive a total of $237,091 to support environmental education programs.

Grow Youngstown will show farmers, businesses and community gardeners how to recycle organic matter, utilize organic waste streams and maintain oxygen-based conditions for optimum composting. The campaign will include classes, an advanced composting course and workshops at local farms.

The OEEF is administered by Ohio EPA. Eligible grant recipients include environmental groups, public and private schools, colleges and universities, trade or professional organizations, businesses and state and local governments.

For additional information, contact the OEEF at (614) 644-2873.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. In the past 40 years, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling. Ohio EPA….40 years and moving forward.
