Ohio EPA Meeting About AK Steel Middletown’s Injection Well Permit

Virtual Public Information Session and Hearing Nov. 12

Ohio EPA will hold a virtual public meeting on Nov. 12, 2020, about applications to renew permits for two underground injection control wells at AK Steel in Middletown.

The virtual public meeting begins at 6 p.m. with the Agency giving a short presentation about the renewal applications and answering questions from the public. A hearing will immediately follow, during which the public may submit written comments on the record about the renewal applications. Citizens who want to participate must register in advance of the meeting.

If approved, the existing permits would be updated and renewed, which would allow AK Steel to continue injecting liquid waste into the 3,300-foot deep wells. AK Steel uses the wells to dispose of a liquid waste known as spent pickle liquor, which is generated during the steelmaking process.

Written comments about the renewal applications will be accepted at the hearing or may be emailed to Tim Hampel at timothy.hampel@epa.ohio.gov. Comments will be accepted until Nov. 20, 2020. A fact sheet about AK Steel’s underground injection control wells is available here

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
