Ohio EPA Meeting Set for Lordstown Battery Cell Plant Project
Information Session and Hearing Scheduled March 12
Ohio EPA will hold a public meeting to discuss the application for a water quality certification submitted by General Motors LLC on behalf of GigaPower LLC. The proposed Lordstown facility would manufacture battery cells for electric vehicles.
An information session will begin at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 12, 2020, at Lordstown High School – Crawford Auditorium, 1824 Salt Springs Road, immediately followed by a joint hearing with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) to accept public comments on the application for the state certification and application for the Corps’ permit.
The proposed project would involve the construction of a large manufacturing plant in Trumbull County with access to rail, highway, and high voltage power. Discharges from the activity, if approved, would result in degradation to, or lowering of, the water quality of the Mud Creek Watershed within the Mahoning Watershed. Proposed degradation of water quality would be offset through appropriate mitigation.
Ohio EPA will accept written comments on the certification application through Sunday, March 22. Anyone may submit comments or request to be on the mailing list for information. To comment or receive information on the application, write to: Ohio EPA-DSW, Attn: Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049 or email firstname.lastname@example.org and please include certification number 206639 on all correspondence.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
