Ohio EPA Meeting Set for Oxford Mining Company – APV Mining Area

Information Session and Hearing Scheduled Oct. 2, 2018

Ohio EPA will hold a public hearing to take comments on a draft wastewater discharge permit that would allow Oxford Mining APV Area to construct wastewater collection, treatment and disposal units serving the mining complex.

An information session will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018, at the New Lexington High School Cafetorium, 2547 Panther Dr., New Lexington, immediately followed by a hearing to accept public comments on the draft permit.

Oxford Mining APV is proposing to discharge into a tributary of Rush Creek, which flows into the Hocking River. Oxford also would have additional discharges going to Buckeye Fork and ultimately Moxahala Creek. This project could contribute to improving water quality in the receiving streams and would restore the mined area to original contours.

Ohio EPA will accept written comments on the draft permit through Oct. 9, 2018. Anyone may submit comments or request to be on the mailing list for information. More information on the draft permit can be found at wwwapp.epa.ohio.gov/dsw/permits/Draft/0IL00172.pdf. To comment or receive information on the draft permit, write to: Ohio EPA-DSW, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049 or email epa.dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
