Ohio EPA Meeting Set to Discuss Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth Wastewater Discharge Permit
Online Information Session and Hearing Scheduled April 22
Ohio EPA will hold an online public meeting to discuss the draft wastewater discharge permit and application renewal submitted by Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth LLC to discharge water into the Scioto River, Little Beaver Creek, Big Run, and the West Ditch.
During the online information session that begins at 6 p.m. on April 22, 2020, the Agency will give a short presentation on the draft permit. Individuals participating in the webinar may submit questions through the webinar application. A webinar hearing will immediately follow during which the public can submit comments through the webinar application on the record about the draft permit.
If approved, the draft permit would reauthorize existing discharges and discharges from a proposed project with the Department of Energy Piketon Gaseous Diffusion plant. Discharges from the activity, if approved, would result in degradation to, or lowering of, the water quality within the Scioto River. The draft permit includes limits to protect all water quality standards in the Scioto River.
Ohio EPA will accept written comments on the certification application through April 29. Anyone may submit comments or request to be on the mailing list for information. To comment or receive information on the application, email email@example.com. Comments received in writing will be given equal consideration to those that are received at the online hearing.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
