Ohio EPA Re-Issues Permit for Wayne County Biosolids Storage Pond

Ohio EPA has re-issued the permit-to-install for the Wiles Storage Pond. The permit allows Buckeye Biogas, LLC, to build a 9.2-million-gallon storage pond in Canaan Township to store anaerobically digested biosolids from the company’s Wooster facility.

The re-issued permit includes corrected language from the original permit issued Sept. 20. This includes the name of the permit applicant, Buckeye Biogas LLC, and the project description which previously included “approximately 300,000 gallons of hog manure” as acceptable material for the storage pond. No material other than anaerobically digested biosolids from the Buckeye Biogas biodigester is approved for placement in the Wiles Storage Pond.

The corrected final permit is available online.

Issuance of final permits can be appealed to the Ohio Environmental Review Appeals Commission (ERAC). Appeals generally must be filed within 30 days of issuing a final action; therefore, anyone considering filing an appeal should contact ERAC at (614) 466-8950 for more information.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
