Ohio EPA Schedules Public Hearing for Proposed Scioto River Discharge

Ohio EPA will hold a public information session and hearing on Aug. 18, 2014, on an application from the city of Columbus to discharge wastewater to the Scioto River from an upgraded system at the Dublin Road water plant. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in the Grandview Heights Public Library, 1685 W. First Ave., Grandview Heights.

The Agency’s review of the application is to ensure that discharges would comply with Ohio’s water quality standards that protect aquatic life and human health.

Written comments are given the same weight as those presented at the hearing. Ohio EPA will accept written comments through the close of business on Aug. 25, 2014. Written comments should be addressed to: Ohio EPA-DSW, Attn: Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
