Ohio EPA Schedules Public Meeting to Discuss Proposed Expansion of Lorain County Landfill

A proposal to expand the Lorain County II Landfill will be the focus of an Oct. 24, 2013, Ohio EPA information session. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the New Russia Township Hall, 46268 Butternut Ridge Road, Oberlin.

Ohio EPA is reviewing a permit application submitted by Lorain County II Landfill LLC (a subsidiary of Republic Services Inc.) for a vertical expansion of its landfill located at 43502 Oberlin-Elyria Road in Oberlin. If approved, the permit would allow the facility to expand vertically over 166 acres of existing landfill, allowing for an additional 9.62 million cubic yards of capacity. The maximum amount of waste the landfill is allowed to receive would remain at 6,500 tons per day.

The information session will be an opportunity to learn more and ask questions about the permit application, Ohio’s solid waste regulations and Ohio EPA’s permitting process.

A copy of the permit application is available for review at Ohio EPA’s Northeast District Office in Twinsburg by first calling (330) 963-1200.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. In the past 40 years, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling. Ohio EPA….40 years and moving forward.
