Public Hearing to Discuss Proposed Changes to Wheelersburg Wastewater Treatment Plant Discharge Permit

Information Session and Hearing Scheduled Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017

Ohio EPA will hold a public meeting to discuss a proposed change to the discharge limits for the Wheelersburg wastewater treatment plant discharge.

The information session will begin at 6 p.m. Feb. 2, at the Portsmouth Public Library, 1220 Gallia Street, Portsmouth. A hearing will immediately follow the information session.

The proposed change would allow an increase in the amount of copper that the facility could discharge to the Ohio River. Limits on pollutants in wastewater discharges are established to protect people’s health and the environment. The application addresses those pollutants and the amount of water allowed to be discharged.

Comments may be presented at the Feb. 2 hearing, or submitted in writing to: Ohio EPA-DSW, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049; or by email: dswcomments@epa.ohio.gov. The public comment period will end Feb. 9, 2017. Following consideration of public comments, Ohio EPA will decide on the application.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
