Public Invited to Comment on Draft Permit Issued to Lorain County’s Republic Steel

Ohio EPA has scheduled a May 7, 2012, public meeting to discuss a draft air permit issued to Republic Steel for a major project at the company’s Lorain steelmaking facility. The information session and public hearing will begin at 6 p.m. at the South Lorain Branch Library, 2121 Homewood Drive, Lorain.

The meeting will be an opportunity for citizens to ask questions and submit comments concerning the draft permit to install a new electric arc furnace, natural gas-fired boiler and material handling and storage area, and to modify existing roadways at the company’s facility located at 1807 E. 28th Street.

The new equipment will provide Republic Steel with an alternative means for producing molten steel for casting operations. If given final approval, the permit will allow construction to begin this year and be completed in mid-2013.

The draft permit places limits on emissions to ensure compliance with federal clean air standards and protect public health. Total allowable emissions include (listed in tons per year): particulate matter 10 microns or less, 162.8; particulate matter 2.5 microns or less, 118.9; sulfur dioxide, 379.1; nitrogen oxides, 319.9; carbon monoxide, 1,211.4; volatile organic compounds, 61.5; lead, 0.23; and mercury, 0.15.
