Public Invited to Comment on Draft Permits Issued to Lake County’s Lubrizol Corporation

Ohio EPA and U.S. EPA have scheduled a May 15, 2012, public meeting to discuss state and federal draft hazardous waste permits issued to The Lubrizol Corporation in Wickliffe. The information session and public hearing will begin at 6 p.m., at the Wickliffe Middle School, 29240 Euclid Avenue.

The meeting will be an opportunity for citizens to ask questions and submit comments concerning Ohio EPA’s draft hazardous waste facility installation and operation permit renewal and U.S. EPA’s draft Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) permit. If issued final, the permits will allow Lubrizol to continue treating and storing hazardous wastes at its facility located at 29400 Lakeland Boulevard.

Lubrizol’s facility is engaged primarily in research, development and testing of lubricant and fuel additives and other specialty chemicals. The facility generates a variety of hazardous wastes which are sent off-site within 90 days of generation or stored for longer periods in a permitted storage unit.

Ohio EPA’s draft permit gives the company approval to store up to 62,000 gallons of hazardous wastes in tanks and 8,250 gallons of wastes in containers located in the storage unit. U.S. EPA’s draft permit covers air emissions from the equipment, tanks and containers.

Citizens may testify at the public hearing or submit comments in writing. The public comment period ends May 30, 2012.

Comments concerning the state draft permit should be sent to: Ohio EPA-DMWM, attn. John Nyers, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, OH 43216-1049 or Comments concerning the federal draft permit should be sent to: U.S. EPA, attn. Jae Lee (LR-8J), 77 West Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL 60604-3590 or
