January 8, 2019 State to Invest Nearly $10 Million to Help Protect Lake Erie
Toledo, OH – The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and Ohio EPA recently received approval from the State Controlling Board to begin funding nearly $10 million in projects aimed toward helping to keep dredged material out of Lake Erie. These projects are part of Ohio’s “Healthy Lake Erie Fund” efforts and will be managed by local officials and sponsors from Toledo, Lorain and Conneaut, the communities where these monies are being invested. These projects represent a portion of a Ohio’s dredged material management program developed jointly by the Ohio EPA, ODNR, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with input from local stakeholders

The Ohio State University Extension Office in Hancock County will use a $38,500 Ohio EPA Environmental Education grant to educate farmers about the environmentally preferable method of incorporating liquid manure to fertilize growing crops. It is one of four grant recipients statewide totaling $168,458.

The Ohio Lake Erie Commission and the State of Ohio have completed the Ohio Domestic Action Plan (DAP) 1.0 to reduce phosphorus entering Lake Erie under the binational Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement with a goal of reducing phosphorus loading to Lake Erie by 40 percent by 2025. This version of the Ohio DAP is being provided to U.S. EPA for review and comment and to serve as Ohio’s part of the US Domestic Action Plan, the final version of which is due in Feb. 2018.

Toledo has received two loans from Ohio EPA to finance combined sewer overflow (CSO) elimination projects, part of the city’s Toledo Waterways Initiative.
